Abstract: Commonly asked questions about normal growth and development of children from birth to 3 years of age are addressed in this 3-part booklet from the University of Tennessee Child Development Center. Questions are categorized into three major sections: 1) growth and development, 2) feeding skills and food patterns, and 3) foods for children. Part I presents the most commonly used growth charts in the U.S. and provides guidelines for using and interpreting chart measurements. Part II describes guidel ines to assess a child's developmental level of function and readiness to progress in eating and self-feeding; this section also provides suggestions for helping children develop good food patterns. Part III outlines the nutritional requirments of young children and shows minimum recommendations for the number of servings of foods in four basic food groups: meat, milk, vegetables and fruit, bread and cereals. Practical suggestions are provided for coping with some common parental concerns about children's food behaviors (i.e. poor appetite, weaning, refusal of specific foods, strong food dislikes, failure to gain weight, overweight).
