Abstract: The application of basic physiological principles to sports and performance is the focus of this text designed for coaches, physical educators, and college students. Aspects of energy production are examined, including 1) applications of energy concepts, 2) energy sources, 3) aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, 4) the relationship between oxygen consumption and energy production, and 5) the energy continuum concept-guidelines and laboratory evidence. The body's use of protein, carbohydrate, and fat as fuels for exercise, the nutritional requirements of athletes, and the effect of other dietary factors on performance are described. The neuromuscular system and oxygen transport system (i.e. respiration, circulation) are examined in detail. Methods and effects of weight-resistance training and sprint and endurance training are explored. The concepts of energy balance and weight control are outlined. Characteristics, treatment, and prevention of dehydration and commonly encountered heat disorders are described, including fluid and salt replacement, acclimatization to heat, and proper clothing. Answers are given to some frequently asked questions about athletic performance and physiology. Responses are categorized according to subject and are intended to help coaches and educators apply scientific principles to their own experiences. Appendices present a description of weight-lifting exercises,examples of eight-week aerobic and anaerobic interval training programs, and suggested stretching exercises.
