Mass media and nonformal nutrition education

Munger, Sara J.
Abstract: A communication model to guide the design of nutrition education programs in less developed countries was successfully tested in Tunisia. The model established four key domains: education, communication, behavioral, and evaluation. The test in Tunisia combined mass media--short radio messages--with nonformal education activity in Maternal Child Health (MCH) centers. The mass media broadcasts attracted wide attention. Interview data obtained from others at MCH center showed no conclusive evidence of change in nutrition or in related behavior patterns, but the program had operated for only 4 months. Some positive change in awareness, knowledge, and attitudes was indicated. The model is considered to be applicable on a general level, but more research is needed on the mass media aspects.
