Abstract: Obese patients treated with triiodothyronine while on a 320 kcal per day liquid diet showed significantly greater weight loss than patients receiving a placebo. The triiodothyronine levels gradually rose over a 12 week period; those patients with the highest levels exhibited the greatest plateauing of weight loss and the least suppression of thyroxine. These obese patients may have a decreased metabolic clearance rate of triiodothyronine with some resistance to the hormone. They also had the lowest resting metabolic rate. These results support the view that some obese patients become metabolically adapted to low-calorie diets.
