Abstract: The Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee of the U.S. Congress presents a report on various aspects of food safety incorporating information from the Congressional Research Service, Federal and state agencies, independent research organizations and private citizens groups. The topics include history; explanation and purpose of government regulations; overview and perspective of trends and policies; reports from 28 states covering existing practices, projected changes and suggestions; independent papers on such subjects as chemical carcinogens, food additives, policy issues and risk/benefit ratios; and statements from a variety of organizations including farmers, consumers, maufacturers, milk producers, soft drink producers, and meat processors. The compilation of this information is intended to provide background and current information not only to the Committee but to anyone interested in food safety and the role of government in regulating it.
