Informing the public about nutrition
1978
Abstract: Nutrition education activities of the United States Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) are described, and recommendations are made to each Department of improve coordination and evaluation procedures in desseminating nutrition information. A lack of coordination is noted both within and between the two major government departments, which are the primary sources of nutrition information. Neither has an effective method to screen or evaluate materials, or information on development and dissemination costs. The Government Accounting Office recommends a centralreview authority for nutrition education materials in each department; an interdepartmental task force on how to meet consumer needs; and the establishment of an interdepartmental task force with representatives from otheragencies, industry, and consumer groups to avoid unnecessary duplication and to address areas of cooperative concern.
