Abstract: A book for the general public provides basic information and answers to questions on a broad variety of topics related to the role of diet in health promotion, disease prevention, and potential health risks. Topics addressed by the 10 text chapters include: sources providing nutritional information (e.g.: animal studies, comparative and evolutionary human studies, epidemiological studies, clinical records and trials, food composition analysis); health aspects of food and nutrition; the history of food and nutrition in Australia; interrelationships between diet and disease (including cancer, hypertension, coronary heart disease); and the role of alcohol intake on health status and disease risk. A brief discussion of methods used for preserving food to ensure food quality also is included. The text includes 27 figures and 33 tables.
