Nutrition counseling
1980-1985
Abstract: Choosing and using nutrition counseling for cardiovascular health is the subject of this brief consumer guide prepared by the Diet Committee of the New York Heart Association. Nutrition counseling is defined as the screening, analysis, and evaluation of personal lifestyle as it affects eating habits, and the implementation of behavior modification recommendations to improve dietary patterns. Qualifications of Registered Dietitians (R.D.s) are described and several ways to find a qualified nutrition counselor are presented. Questions that clients may wish to ask potential counselors are listed. How to prepare for the initial counseling session, what happens in individual counseling sessions, and what results to expect from the counseling procedure overall are discussed. Qualified nutrition counselors are recommended to patients with or at increased risk for developing heart disease. These professionals can help translate dietary guidelines from physicians or professional organizations into recipes and menus that reduce salt, saturated fat, cholesterol and/or calorie intake as needed.
