WIC nutrition education in grocery stores demonstration project

Abstract: The results of a demonstration project designed to test the ability of a 1-month in-store nutrition education program to improve the nutritional status of WIC program participants are reported. The in-store intervention proram included vendor employee training and promotional and educational activities. Pre-and post-test scores regarding attitudes, knowledge, and behavior of vendor employees indicated that vendor training had a positive impact on the vendor employees, especially in improving their knowledge and ability to properly carry out WIC check-cashing procedures. Pre-and post-test scores of WIC participants (subjects and controls) indicated that the intervention had a limited impact on the attitudes, knowledge, and behavior of the subjects in terms of their selection and use of WIC foods, but a positive impact was noted for their correct use of WIC checks.
