Abstract: The proceedings of a 1985 conference on effective data management and use in US state and local public health nutrition programs assesed the types, quality and appropriateness of data available for attaining US health promotion and disease prevention objectives by 1990. Topics include: the current status of state and local nutrition services; US objectives vs. current status; data needs to measure state and local program accomplishments; observations from various state and local health agencies; work group reports on the various 1990 objectives (e.g., breast-feeding, serum cholesterol, obesity, iron deficiency in pregnancy); available national health and nutrition databases; nutrition surveillance systems; and private and public sector resources for financing nutrition services. Numerous illustrations and data tables are included throughout the text.
