Abstract: A self-study module to aid WIC staff to counsel cclients covers various preventive aspects of preschool and childhood nutrition. Information and guidelines are presented in the following areas: good nutrition goals; the development of food consumption patterns; negative eating behavior and its solution; nutritional requirements for preschoolers; nutritional information on food groups; recommended eating habits covering serving sizes and meal patterns; food preferences of children; guidelines on snacks and desserts; and nutritional risk factors (e.g.: obesity, iron-deficiency anemia; dental caries). Specific guidelines on protein foods, grains, milk products, milk, vegetables, fruits, and vitamin A and C foods are included. Question-answer sessions are included throughout the text. (wz).
