Six on line regulatory approaches used by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to control the composition and nutritional quality of foods are named and briefly described. The issue of concern, however, is trace element nutrition. Food processing may cause significant losses of these essential nutrients. The population currently has an unknown trace element status. Statements from Allen Forbes of FDA's Division of Nutrition and Consumer Sciences are quoted to indicate the importance of the subject.
