Japan's school lunch program: Controversy and change
1982
Shirakigawa, Tomiko
The Japanese School Lunch Program instituted a national school lunch day to gain recognition from the community and to celebrate the Association's 20th anniversary. Two food service directors from the US assisted with the planning by sharing information about the US National School Lunch Day. Because of opposition from Japanese community groups, only 60% of the schools participated in Rice Curry Day. Problems of the Japanese lunch program are similar to those in the US, although specifics vary because of cultural differences. Community groups should have an opportunity to review and assist with the revision of the program. If another Rice Curry Day occurs, the lunch will be a result of groups working together. The day will provide an opportunity to explain benefits and improve the image of the Japanese School Lunch Program. (rkm)
