Rastafarian food habits
1976
Landman-Bogues, Jacqueline
The food habits of the Rastafarians, a Jamaica religio political cult, are reviewed. Rastafarians are basically vegetarians; they exclude meat and meat products from their diet. Freshly harvested vegetables or freshly caught fish are preferred to those products which are purchased from regular commercial outlets. Coconut milk is substituted for cow's milk. Dried fruits such as raisins, prunes, and nuts may be regular features of the Rastafarian diet. There are many positive aspects of these food habits; however, the diet may cause undernutrition. Dietitians must understand and respect these food customs while assisting Rastafarians to choose balanced diets.
