Cyanobacteria are a group of microorganisms that have been studied for pigment production. Among these pigments, phycobiliproteins, especially the phycocyanin (PC), of blue color, are found in great quantity. To evaluate cell growth and the synthesis of PC from Anabaena variabilis, different conditions to supplement basal culture medium (BG11₀) were applied. A common composition that allowed to obtain the highest concentration and purity of the PC (78.43 mg g⁻¹ of PC and purity of 0.85) including a high cellular growth (0.35 g L⁻¹ of dry mass) was the medium containing 0.5 g L⁻¹ glucose and 2 mM nitrate. This work showed that is possible to improve PC production and contributes to future expansion of applications.
