Effective use of total parenteral nutrition in an ileostomy patient
1984
Iles, Mary
Extract: A 52-year-old female ileostomy patient was stabilized by parenteral nutrition. The TPN solution was calculated to provide appropriate energy, protein, and vitamins, plus the necessary fluid and minerals essential to replace losses via the ostomy. The patient was weaned from the TPN solution onto tube feeding and then onto foods plus an enteral electrolyte drip. Through nutritional support, the patient was able to absorb nutrients better, her nutritional status improved, and some lean body mass was restored. (author)
