This article presents the answers to five questions concerning the use of gastrointestinal surgery as treatment for severe obesity: 1) what are the nonsurgical treatment options for severe obesity and their consequences? 2) what are the surgical treatments and criteria for selection? 3) what are the efficacy and risks of surgical treatments for obesity? 4) what specific recommendations can be made for the treatment of severe obesity? and 5) what are the future directions for basic science, clinical research, and epidemiologic evaluation of therapy?
