Conflict erupts over landmark E.U. neuroscience plan
2014
Enserink, Martin | Kupferschmidt, Kai
More than 300 neuroscientists have signed an open letter sent to the European Commission on 7 July to complain about the Human Brain Project (HBP), a hugely ambitious research effort led by Henry Markram of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. HBP, which will receive up to €1 billion in funding from the European Union and its member states, aims to capture the human brain in computer models. The critics say that it is too narrowly focused and poorly managed; they threaten to boycott HBP unless the commission tightens an upcoming review of the project and makes corrections.
