Salivary glands from five species of marine carnivorous gastropods, Charonia sauliae, Monoplex echo, Rapana thomasiana, Buccinum schantaricum and Neptunea lyrata, were screened for toxins including tetramine. Four species, except R. thomasiana, were toxic to mice; extraordinarily high toxicity was observed with M. echo. The N. lyrata toxin was tetramine, while those of the other three species were not. The M. echo toxin was a peptide with a mol. wt of about 7000.
