Kitchen supplies overview

The term "kitchen supplies" refers to a wide range of utensils used by food service operations in the preparation of food. Supplies can be categorized into 1) items used to prep products before cooking (can openers, peelers, graters), 2) items used to cook foods (pots, pans, baking dishes), 3) items used to transfer foods (spoons, ladles, strainers), 4) containers used for storing foods, and 5) items used in clean up (grill scrapers, scrubbers, waste containers). The largest portion of kitchen supplies sales is replacement business of products that wear out rather quickly with heavy kitchen use. The first important step in marketing kitchen supplies successfully is to become thoroughly familiar with the product line and how different items are used in the food service operation. The next step is to take advantage of opportunities to tie-in sales kitchen supplies with food orders. Guidelines are provided on how to incorporate the marketing of supplies into different sales activities such as 1) taking the regular food order, 2) discussing a new product, 3) sampling a product, 4) presenting a complete meal idea, or 5) helping a customer review his current menu.(aje)
