Nutritional conditions in Canada
1981
Beaton, G.H.
An overview of a national nutrition survey (Nurition Canada program) that collected data in 1970-72 discusses the survey and the studies and actions that followed it to the current time. The survey revealed a generally good national nutritional status, with the exception of native groups. The overview specifically addresses the topics of: obesity in Canada, serum lipid levels, folic acid, vitamin A status, ascorbic acid status of the eskimo, and socioeconomic influences on nutritional status. The survey did not include all nutritional status aspects; parameters of vitamin B6 and trace element status (except for iron) were not included. Further, the survey relates to the well' population who visited community clinics, but not those who were sick and did not. Finally, since the survey was conducted almost 10 years ago, meaningful trend analyses cannot readily be made. Hence, interpretation is limited by the absence of longitudinal information and by the methodology used at the time of the survey. Since great strides have been made in nutrition knowledge and methodology in the past decade, application of these advances to ongoing monitoring systems should provide a useful link to the important Nutrition Canada survey.
