Nutrition education in childbirth classes
1983
Easches, Janet G. | Johnson, Rachel | Huff, Janet
A nutrition education packet comprised of 4 lesson plans (15-20 minutes each) is outlined. Lesson topics include: eating right (nutritional needs, food substitutions, and nutrient supplements); weight gain (controlled, gradual); detrimental substances (alcohol, tobacco, caffeine); and methods of easing discomfort during pregnancy. Each lesson is comprised of an overall goal, specific behavioral objectives, a list of key questions and answers, a set of client activities, and information pamphlets. The packet was field tested in Hawaii by nutrition educators on expectant women with satisfactory results, but was found to be somewhat time-consuming. Follow-up indicated that the packet was most effective with respect to smoking and caffeine use. The layout of the education packet is illustrated. (wz)
