Four racemic 3,4-dihydro-3-hydroxyaikyl-4-alkyl-2H-1,3-benzoxazines (I-IV) were synthesized and evaluated for insect growth regulatory (IGR) activity against desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. (±) -3,4-Dihydro-S-(2’-hydroxyethyl)-4-methyl-2H-1,3-benzoxazine (I), (±)-3,4-dihydro-4-ethyl-3-(2’-hydroxyethyl)- 2H-1,3-benzoxazine (III) and (+)-3,4-dihydro-4-ethyl-3-(3’-hydroxypropyl)- 2H-1.3-benzoxazine (IV) showed good IGR activity by interfering in the wing development of the insects. Compound I showed maximum activity as the number of normal adults emerged was minimum (55.6). Increase in chain length, either at 3 or 4 position resulted in decrease in IGR activity.
