Advice given to parents describes how they can promote healthy food habits and increase their child's self-esteem and sense of responsibility. Exercise and activity should be encouraged along with good food habits. Children should learn to be inquisitive, get involved, handle chores, plan activities, and participate in sports. Parents can help their children avoid food abuses by preparing meals from the basic food groups, involving the children in the preparation, and controlling the fat, sugar, and salt in the diet. Fresh fruits and foods should be consumed where possible and children should be encouraged to eat breakfast. Junk food snacks should be avoided. (kbc)
