Antigen transfer from the intestinal lumen into the systemic circulation demonstrates dramatic changes with maturation of the neonate. The developing infant also is exposed to dietary antigen in utero by transplacental transfer. The interaction with dietary antigen and maternal immunity may alter significantly the response of the neonate to dietary antigens. The tolerant response to dietary antigen observed in the mature infant may be enhanced by these interactions or, under certain circumstances, diminished. An understanding of those factors which govern the development of a priming or tolerant response to dietary antigen will allow new approaches to prevention and treatment of adverse immune-mediated reactions to dietary proteins in infancy and childhood.
