Young, urban, low-income expectant mothers were found to have intakes below the recommended allowances for all nutrients studied except ascorbic acid. Energy, calcium, and iron intakes were particularly low in these women. Such factors appear to be common in the diets of low-income girls and consequently warrant more attention from those members of the health team who may play a role in the nutrition component of obstetrical care. In many cases, however, the physician's concern over nutritional problems was expressed by prescribing a therapeutic diet or supplements rather than by realistically looking at the expectant mother's diet. Patients may not take the nutritional supplements on a regular basis. Even if they are regularly consumed, supplements do not improve energy or protein intake.
