A study assessed the treatment safety and therapeutic efficacy of vitamin D2 with that of alfacalcidol (25 and 0.5 micrograms/day, respectively) and a placebo, in which 41 elderly patients having subclinical osteomalacia were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 drugs or to the placebo for 3 months (those assigned the placebo received 1 of the 2 drugs for an additional 3 months). Drug treatment resulted in a decrease in osteoid values to normal. The results suggest that elderly subclinical osteomalacia may be corrected by the treatment employed using either drug over a 3-month period and that the treatments were safe and not accompanied by hypercalcemia or renal disorder.
