Standardization of organic production technology of Aloe vera under rain fed conditions

Aloe barbadensis or Aloe vera which belongs to the family Liliaceae is easily propagated from cuttings. Aloe species (A. barbadensis Mill), a perennial succulent is the source of drug aloe. Aloe is the yellow, bitter juice obtained by cutting the leaves at their base and the dark brown mass of drug aloe is obtained by evaporating the juice. Organic manures are considered to be safe and yielding good produce by improving water penetration, water holding capacity, improvement in soil structure, microbial biomass, nutrient availability, drought and heat stress resistance. Vermicompost and Farm Yard Manure are very important organic fertilizers produced through different processes and have different effect on plant growth. Study was carried out to find out the effect organic-fertilizers such as fym and wormicompost on various morphological parameters. Results showed that plant grown in Vermicompost and fym pre-treated soil exhibited maximum increase in all morphological parameters such as root length, shoot length, number of root branches, number of stem branches. Individually the fym and vermicompost had positive effect on the aloe vera growth but the combined application of vermicompost and the fym had significantly affected the Aloe vera growth than their individual applications of fym and vermicompost, respectively. This may be due to the complimentary affect of fym and vermicompost resulting in better nutrient availability.
