The concept of essential amino acids in human nutrition - need for reassessment
1978
Chitre, R.G. | Agte, Vaishali
Findings from two dietary surveys which were conducted to determine the amino acid intake of preschool children in India are reported. Amino acid requirements are specified. There exists a deficiency of lysine, tyrosine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, and cystine-methionine. Clinical examination of the children did not reveal frank syndromes of any specific deficiency disease. This clearly suggests the possibility of adaptation mechanisms. Such adaptation seems to be a process inherent in poor, undernourished populations since childhood due to long usage of low protein diets.
