The professional organization as a learning community
1979
Knowles, Malcolm S.
Organizations must become learning communities that encourage, support and provide resources for members to grow, develop and change throughout their lives. Six modern assumptions on education provide guidelines for redefining the role of professional organizations in continuing education. 1) The purpose of education is to produce a competent person. 2) The nature of education is the learner's acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values with the help of a resource person. 3) Learning is most effective when conducted at the learner's convenience of time and place. 4) A professional must engage in a lifelong course of development. 5) Society has the responsibility to accelerate change in continuing education. 6) The nature of adult learning necessitates learner participation and self-direction in educational planning.
