It is the consensus of many health professionals that most Canadian children obtain adequate nutrients from their dietary intake. This study examines nutrient intake from foods alone, and also from foods plus vitamin and/or mineral supplementation. The families and day-care workers for 51 boys three to six years of age were taught to record by weight and measure all food and supplements ingested by the children. Results are based on the last 14 of 21 days of record-keeping. The average intake for each child was appraised for nutrient adequacy relative to the 1983 Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) for Canadians. The results indicated that the mean intake of the group as a whole was within recommended ranges for most nutrients, supporting other reports of young children studied across Canada.
