Characterization of Predominant Farming System of Kymore Plateau and Satpura Hill Zone of Madhya Pradesh

The study has examined the predominant farming systems and constraints in the Kymore Plateau and Satpura Hill zone during the year 2010–11. A total of 72 farmers were selected by using the multistage sampling technique from the Patan and Kundam blocks in Jabalpur district. The data of both the blocks have revealed that the cereal-based farming was most predominant (79.6% farmers), followed by livestock-based (10.1% farmers) and vegetablebased (10.1% farmers) in the Kymore Plateau and Satpura Hill zone. A number of factors have been found to influence returns from the farming system. As per sample households, fragmentation and sub-division of landholding, scarcity of labour, low yield of crops, less reliable markets, scarcity of owned-fund, degradation of natural resources, global warming, non-availability of good quality seeds, variety and breeds, and lack of shades for animal and poultry etc. were the major constraints restricting higher returns from different farming systems.
