Response of rotenone-bearing devil's shoestring, Tephrosia virginiana (L.) Pers., to fertilizer applications

A study was made at Wellborn, Tex., of the effect on the yield of the rotenone and rotenoid content of the roots of devil's shoestring, Tephrosia virginiana, when nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers were applied alone and in combination for periods of 1, 2, and 3 years following transplanting of 1-year-old seedlings in Norfolk fine sand. The net effect of nitrogen was to increase the yield of roots significantly. Potash significantly increased yield of roots and improved the quality of roots as measured by the percentage of rotenone and total chloroform extractives. The phosphate applications had no effect on yield of roots but reduced the quality of the roots significantly.
