After a brief history on the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes dating back to before 1500 BC, this chapter reviews: 1) the criteria for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in children; 2) incidence and symptoms; 3) blood sugar levels at diagnosis; 4) hyperosmolar coma; 5) metabolic acidosis and coma; and 6) two case histories (permanent neonatal diabetes, and the results of delayed onset of insulin therapy).
