Extract: A broad range of factors affect the longrun prospects for the efficiency and equity with which U.S. agriculture will respond to a steadily rising world population, increasing but fluctuating world food supplies, and increasing levels of world agricultural trade. The Economic Research Service (ERS) is expanding its focus on the factors affecting these problems and is reexamining the data base used to describe the food problem and studying the theoretical framework used to explain it. It considers social welfare resulting from adjustments in U.S. agriculture as well as the response of U.S. agriculture.
