Comparative study of endogenous fecal fatty acids in germ-free and conventional rats

Fecal fatty acids are usually classified as exogenous or endogenous, but this does not take into account the extensive and very active gastrointestinal flora. Two groups of 3 conventional (CVL) and 3 germ-free (GF) rats were fed a lipid-free diet. Gastrointestinal microflora extensively modified the endogenous fecal fatty acid spectra qualitatively. Mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids in GF rats was 3.5 times higher, but even-numbered and saturated fatty acids in CVL rats were 1.5 times higher. In CVL rats odd-numbered fatty acids were 6.5% of total endogenous fecal fatty acids, but in GF rats, 1.5%. In CVL rats branched-chain levels were 12.9%, but in GF rats, 2.0%.
