Gender differences related to weight history, eating patterns, efficacy expectations, self-esteem, and weight loss among participants in a weight reduction program
1986
Forster, J.L. | Jeffery, R.W.
A 16-week study of 113 overweight adults (58 women, 55 men) assessed sex differences in weight loss and in associated behaviors among individuals in a behavioral modification weight loss program. The program involved weekly group meetings with instruction in nutrition, exercise, and behavioral topics. Women reported greater prior dieting efforts and more overweight at age 25 than men, and more eating in response to mood and low self-efficacy situations. Men reported more eating in social situations. Other differences also are reported. It was concluded that sex differences exist with respect to weight history and dieting success, and that these differences may influence the results of weight loss efforts.(wz)
