The National child benefit: a social policy in context
1997
Gallant, D.
In advanced industrial societies where income is central to social well-being, strong social policies are required to ensure that all citizens have access to reasonable incomes. The recent Federal-Provincial initiative to develop and Integrated Child Benefit is an important social policy development for children in Canada. It recognizes our collective responsibility to children as citizens and proposes to invest additional resources targeted to low-income children as a means to reduce the depth and scope of child proverty. It is clear, however, that the resources currently committed are no match for the scale of the child proverty problem in Canada and that sustained public and political support over the longer term is needed for this policy initiative to realize its full potential.
