Tenuazonic acid produced by an Alternaria alternata isolate from Beta vulgaris

A toxigenic fungus was isolated from leaves of field-grown Beta vulgaris and identified as Alternaria alternata. This isolate (LS-2) is typical of the A. alternata species complex from the morphological standpoint. LS-2 produced abundant quantities (ca. 150 mg/l) of tenuazonic acid. This metabolite exhibited toxicity to cell cultures of B. vulgaris in the 10(-5) M range. A simple procedure was developed for the isolation and quantification of the toxin based on its chelation of Fe3+ ions. Tenuazonic acid was isolated from the fungus as the Na complex form. A UV and NMR spectroscopic comparison has been drawn of the Na complex and the free acid forms.
