Correlation of the findings of a longitudinal and a cross-sectional study provided estimates of the incidence of active corneal xerophthalmia in rural Indonesian children. Incidence of xerophthalmic corneal disease was found to be 5 per 1000 per year in a longitudinal survey of 4595 preschool Javanese children examined every 3 months. A cross-sectional study of 27,084 children throughout Indonesia indicated a prevalence of active xerophthalmia among preschool children of 6.4 per 10,000--53% of the prevalence found in the longitudinal study areas. Using this data to adjust the incidence rate over all of Indonesia, it may be concluded that 63,000 Indonesian children, aged 0-6, develop xerophthalmia each year. Extrapolation of these figures to much of Asia (India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Indonesia) suggests that some 500,000 new cases of corneal disease, half of which may lead to blindness, occur each year in these 4 countries.
