Strategies used to induce weight loss by changing either the protein, carbohydrate or fat composition of the diet are discussed. Methods include: diets which reduce the efficiency of utilization of calories consumed (related to energy dissipated as body heat); impaired absorption (i.e., high fiber or non-absorbable gastrointestinal coatings that prevent carbohydrate or fat absorption); exercise (as a part of a total program); unbalanced low calorie diets (popular or gimmicky approaches, i.e., kelp and vinegar diet); protein supplemented fasting (powders or liquids); and the balanced diets (best for long term nutritional adequacy). If calories must be restricted to 800, a high quality protein diet with mixed carbohydrates is recommended. (kbc)
