Proving its worth: Jessie McLenaghen and home economics in British Columbia
1991
DeZwart, M.L.
In British Columbia, home economics had been a marginal part of the public school system for over twenty years before a provincial supervisor was appointed in 1926. The story of how Jessie McLenaghan, first holder of the position, proved the worth of home economics in the B.C. school system provides a view of the political and ideological conditions under which legitimization was achieved. McLenaghen's own writings, interviews with colleagues, Department of Education Annual Reports, and contemporary newspaper accounts are used to build a contextual picture of her mission to prove that home economics was a prepared subject. Home economics is viewed as an integral part of the progressive education movement in the study. By examining the work of home economics pioneers such as Jessie McLenaghen, we can become more aware of the restrictions and contradictions which concerned them and which may affect current practices.
