An in vitro study of H3-thymidine incorporation into chick embryo cellular DNA assessed whether DNA synthesis stimulation (DSS) by the sera correlated with the sera growth hormone (GH) and albumin levels. Sera from 10 severely malnourished children (5 with kwashiorkor, ages 12-42 months; 5 with marasmus, ages 6-30 months), was used. DSS was significantly lower in sera from the kwashiorkor children than in 10 normal controls (ages 12-59 months), while no difference was noted between sera from the marasmus children and the normal controls. The degree of DSS was significantly increased after the kwashiorkor children were on 14 days of nutritional therapy. Serum GH levels in both malnourished groups were significantly higher than in normals, and were found to decrease after 14 days of nutritional therapy. A significant linear correlation was found between DSS activity and albumin levels in the childrens' sera. (wz)
