Two broad features in cancer research have particular relevance for nutritionists: dietary factors in the cause of cancer and the place of diet in cancer treatment. Several topics are discussed in detail: diet, bacteria and cancer of the colon; diet, hormones, and breast cancer; diet and other cancers; the prudent diet; and, nutrition and the cancer patient. Special attention is given to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or intravenous hyperalimentation, a new technique that bypasses the anorexia and mechanical blockages common with cancer patients and keeps the patient in a state of positive nutritional balance.
