Vitamin A, vitamin E, retinol binding protein (RBP), and prealbumin in digestive cancers

The serum levels of retinol and alpha-tocopherol decrease in cases of digestive cancer. These serum level decreases may be the result of a dietary deficiency, a decreased intestinal absorption, or a metabolic disorder induced by the neoplasma. This study measures serum levels of vitamin A, vitamin E, retinol binding protein, and prealbumin in three groups of subjects: healthy patients, colon polyp patients, and digestive cancer patients. No differences were found between the control group and the polyp group. The serum levels of all four indices were lower in cancer patients than in controls. The authors conclude that the simultaneous reduction of retinol binding protein and prealbumin is a sign of protein deficiency and that the decreased serum levels of vitamins A and vitamins E observed in digestive cancers are a consequence of the nutritional deficiency.
