Lipid and retinol contents in the milk of Egyptian mothers with normal and sick infants

Analysis of mature breast milk from 35 Egyptian lactating mothers (14 producing normal healthy infants, and the remaining 21 having infants with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) (3), gastroenteritis (GI) (8), respiratory tract infection (8), or both PEM and GI (2)) revealed lower levels of lipid and retinol in the breast milk obtained from mothers with sick infants. The mean levels of lipid, retinol, and carotene in the breast milk from mothers having normal healthy infants were ca. 3.8%, and 30 and 65 micrograms/100 g, respectively. The study also revealed a direct correlation between normal infant growth and retinol levels in maternal milk.(wz)
