Two species of eels, common European eel Anguilla anguilla and pike eel Muraenesox cinereus, were found to contain proteinaceous toxins in the skin mucus. Both toxins of A. anguilla and M. cinereus were unstable acidic proteins with a mol. wt of about 400,000, similar to the toxin previously purified from the skin mucus of Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. The toxins of three species of eels were also immunologically comparable to one another. Sphingosine and gangliosides showed inhibitory effects on the lethal activity of the A. anguilla and A. japonica toxins.
