'Obesity many disorders;' causes sought in genes, neurochemistry, psychology

A brief review highlights the major message of a recent conference on human obesity, that the etiology of obesity is comprised of many disorders. It is noted, however, that due to the marked improvement in the quality of supporting evidence, clinicians may be able to identify sub-groups of obese subjects and target therapies to their specific problem. Recent animal and human data indicate that obesity causes and a thermogenic defect may be linked to genetics, involvement of the sympathetic nervous system, and biochemical competitors of tryptophan and the satiety-signaling effects of serotonin. Relevant literature studies are cited and discussed.(wz)
