Opportunities and challenges associated with using municipal waste incineration ash as a raw ingredient in cement production – a review

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash contains the elemental composition necessary for cement manufacturing and is a potentially feasible substitute for traditional materials utilized in this process. However, MSWI ash is underutilized in this application and is the subject of considerable research. A number of studies have been published on the topic of MSWI ash incorporation into cement production, but a critical gap in the literature is the lack of a comprehensive overview of the published science regarding this practice. This manuscript serves to fill this gap, providing an extensive review and summary of globally published literature regarding the use of MSWI ash as a raw ingredient for cement production. Topics include an analysis of raw material composition, performance characteristics, environmental considerations, chloride and alkali limitations, and life cycle impacts for clinker and cement created using MSWI ash (bottom ash or fly ash) as a raw ingredient. This document does not cover the direct use of MSWI ash as a cementitious material supplement (i.e., cement replacement), but rather only MSWI ash as a raw ingredient replacement in the manufacture of cementitious material. Existing literature documents a range of impacts that MSWI ash as a kiln feed material may have on cement behavior. Deficiencies as well as improvements in cement quality have been attributed to MSWI ash incorporation into cement. Existing studies suggest viable addition of untreated MSWI ash addition is limited to below 10%, but control of harmful substances may increase viable addition to around 30–50%, with some exceptions.
