The nutritional intake of patients with alcoholic pancreatitis or cirrhosis prior to the onset of symptoms was evaluated to identify dietary factors in the pathogenesis of alcoholic pancreatitis. Pancreatitis patients did not consume more protein or fat than either normal controls or alcoholics with cirrhosis; high nutrient levels are not necessary for the development of pancreatitis in alcoholics. A higher association between pancreatitis and cirrhosis was found than was expected. Alcoholic pancreatitis developed earlier than cirrhosis, but the nutritional status of pancreatitis patients was superior to that of cirrhotic alcoholics. Nutritional intake of both groups was below national norms.
